After dominating the 2017 Golden Globes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that La La Land scooped up the most 2017 Academy Award nominations, followed by Moonlight. Of course, there’s been La La Land backlash since the Globes (i.e., It’s another movie about white people falling in love. It’s a movie about jazz that doesn’t feature people of color prominently. It’s not better than Moonlight). But Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood, so here we are.
This year isn’t nearly as white as last year’s #OscarsSoWhite. That’s not a win by any means, but even a little progress is better than none. A couple of notable things…Viola Davis received her third Academy Award nomination, making her the most nominated black woman in Oscar history. She along with Naomie Harris and Octavia Spencer were all nominated for Best Supporting Actress, creating a new record for women of color in the category. And Bradford Young is the first black man to be nominated for Best Cinematography.
As far as the nominees go, I don’t take issue with most of the choices. I mean, I’m annoyed that Justin Timberlake is being recognized for that awful song, that Suicide Squad has a nomination (even if it’s just for hair and makeup), and that Mel Gibson is being welcomed back to Hollywood with open arms despite being an abusive, anti-semitic asshole. But what can I do? (Tweet furiously.)
Bummers for me personally? I’m glad Arrival is getting recognition, but I do think it got screwed on two fronts: Amy Adams for Best Actress and Jóhann Jóhannsson for Best Original Score. Adams easily could’ve replaced Meryl Streep (who’s up to 20 lifetime nominations now), but apparently Jóhannsson’s score doesn’t fit the Academy’s original score criteria. I also think Shane Black’s The Nice Guys was wholly overlooked in the screenplay department.
Take a look at the nominees below and tell me what you think! Any snubs you see? Then, we’ll all tune in on February 26th when Jimmy Kimmel hosts the 89th Annual Academy Awards. And hey—he can’t be any worse than Jimmy Fallon was at the Globes!
