How Is 2017 Awards Season Here Already?!

Once again, limited film releases have screwed me over—hence my “Oh, shit” reaction to the 2017 Golden Globe nominations that came out today. I haven’t seen most of the films on this list because most aren’t wide releases until the end of December or beginning of January. Weirdly, I think I’ve seen more of the nominated TV shows this year. But who cares because it’s the Golden Globes, and they’re the worst. Just wait until the Screen Actors Guild nominations, which come out…WEDNESDAY?! Son of a bitch. Fine, let’s do the things. The Big Short: Educational or Condescending?

“Is this trying to be educational or condescending?” is what I kept asking myself during The Big Short. Because it’s got this weird (to borrow the term from A.V. Club) edu-tainment way of storytelling. Think heist-like comedy of going against “the man” mixed with docudrama exposing Wall Street for its shitty ways. Can the Oscars get any whiter? One of the best movies of 2015 was directed and written by a black man, and it stars a black man. It was beloved by the critics AND killed it at the box office. But you know what? It didn’t get shit (It being Creed, by the way). You think the Academy cares about a lack of diversity? They don’t.
