Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Kong: Skull Island Lays the Foundation for a Monster Franchise

Kong: Skull Island is a prequel of sorts, though probably not in the way you’re expecting. Then again, if you’ve kept up with, well, the internet, the secret’s been out for some time. Kong will face Godzilla in 2020, so Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island is the prequel to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. We’re about to get a franchise of monster fights that will hopefully provide more knock-down-drag-out awesomeness than other “versus” movies we’ve seen of late. 10 Cloverfield Lane: The Mysterious “Sequel” Isn’t Exactly a Sequel

10 Cloverfield Lane has been a giant mystery ever since its trailer appeared out of the blue. It was a project not even its actors knew was a relative of the 2008 found-footage-style monster film Cloverfield. In fact, the original working title of this film was The Cellar, and it was known as such all the way up until the trailer’s release. That’s how secretive this movie is. But what do you expect when it comes from J.J. Abrams, the master of secrety secrets? Continue reading “10 Cloverfield Lane: The Mysterious “Sequel” Isn’t Exactly a Sequel”

George Clooney and Hugh Bonneville in The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men Isn’t Exactly “Monumental”

Well, this is a sad day for me. I had high hopes for this movie. I even put it on my most anticipated list for this year. And I walked out of the theater…disappointed. I should’ve guessed as much when The Monuments Men was moved to February, away from its original December release, which would’ve made it Oscar-bait. Why else would Clooney have pushed his pet project back, unless he knew it wasn’t as good as the other awards nominees? But we’ll get to that in a moment. Continue reading “The Monuments Men Isn’t Exactly “Monumental””

Monsters University (2013)

Monsters University is Kid-Animal House

If you’ve been reading my reviews long enough, you know I have a beef with sequels. Generally, I try to avoid them because, well, they suck. My rule has always been “If you have to put a number after the title of the movie, then you shouldn’t make the movie.” (The exceptions, of course, are movies in trilogies or series where the other films continue the unfinished journey of the first film, like Star Wars). Continue reading “Monsters University is Kid-Animal House”

Argo Is Serious Oscar Bait

I can’t even begin to tell you how many people were asking me whether or not I had seen Argo (and if I’d be reviewing it). This movie is a hot topic right now. Then again, there’s nothing really of this movie’s caliber out in theaters right now for people to talk about. Oh, Paranormal Activity 4, you say? How interesting! I’m sure they’ve never done anything like it before! How about you shut up so I can talk about a really, really good movie instead of your shitty horror film? Continue reading “Argo Is Serious Oscar Bait”
