So I’ve been bad about writing reviews this month. Because summer and shit. You know how it goes. Eating too much barbecue, doing things outside, occasionally getting super depressed thinking about how the inevitable heat death of the universe is coming for us all. The usual stuff. And hey! I managed to tackle Spider-Man: Homecoming, so that’s an accomplishment. But I still have drafts sitting open for Baby DriverWar for the Planet of the Apes, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets that, let’s be honest, I’m not going to finish. If you’ve been reading my reviews long enough, you know I have a beef with sequels. Generally, I try to avoid them because, well, they suck. My rule has always been “If you have to put a number after the title of the movie, then you shouldn’t make the movie.” (The exceptions, of course, are movies in trilogies or series where the other films continue the unfinished journey of the first film, like Star Wars). Prometheus: Are You Seeing This?

I’ve heard and read a lot of comments lately about Ridley Scott only returning to the Alien universe because his most recent movies (See: Robin Hood, Body of Lies, and American Gangster) haven’t done as well at the box office or in the eyes of the critics. Quite frankly, I’m a firm believer in the old saying that writers live by: “Write what you know.” Considering Ridley Scott created the Alien universe, why shouldn’t he go back to it and give it more depth?
